Kodak Instamatic 104 in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)

Posted by Sebastian on January 18, 2023

Quentin Tarantino’s 10th movie features a Kodak Instamatic 104 with a flashcube attachment in Sharon Tate’s (played by Margot Robbie) cinema ticket scene.

– One, please.
– Seventy-five cents.
– What if I’m in the movie?
– What do you mean?
– I mean, I’m in the movie. I’m Sharon Tate.
– You’re in this?
– Mm-hm. I play Miss Carlson, the klutz. That’s me.
– But that’s the girl from Valley of the Dolls.
– Well, that’s me, the girl from Valley of the Dolls.
– Really?
– Really.
– Hey, Rubin! Come out here.
– This is the girl from Valley of the Dolls.
– Patty Duke?
– No, the other one.
– The girl from Peyton Place?
– No, the other one.
– The one who ends up doing dirty movies.
– Oooh.
– She’s in this movie.
– Oh.
– Sharon Tate.
– Well, welcome to the Bruin, Miss Tate. Thank you for coming to our theater. Would you like to come in and see the show?
– Could I?
– By all means.
– Thank you.
– Hey, can I get a picture?
– Oh, sure.
– Okay. You know, why don’t you stand over by the poster so people will know who you are.

The Kodak Instamatic 104 featured a connector for the new flashcube, instead of the Instamatic 100’s holder for single flashbulbs. When the shutter was cocked for the next exposure, the camera turns the flashcube 90 degrees to bring the next flashbulb into position.

While Sharon Tate poses next to her movie poster, we can see the actual flash lighting up the image for one or two frames, its light reflects in the movie poster glass frame and then slightly and slowly dims down.
